If you experience circumstances that affect your ability to complete or submit an assignment, you will need to submit an Extenuating Circumstances (EC) Application.
New Extenuating Circumstances (ECs) System:
In response to student feedback about the current Extenuating Circumstances (ECs) system the University has been working to develop a single digital solution for ECs which aims to provide a consistent experience for all of our students. The University has adopted a phased approach to implementing the new system.
All students in the Faculty of Science and Engineering will be using the new system from the start of Semester 2 in the 2023/24 academic year.
You can find guidance on how to access the new system and how to submit an EC request here.
If your request is accepted, you may be given an extended deadline or an exemption, as appropriate. The entire process takes place online and you will be notified by email of the outcome of your request.
If you are a Postgraduate Researcher please contact the Postgraduate Research Team via pgr-scienceengineering@swansea.ac.uk to discuss extenuating circumstances.
Key Deadlines:
- EC requests must be submitted within 5 working days (before or after) of the affected assignment deadline.
- Requests should be submitted before the deadline whenever possible. We always advise students to submit EC requests before the submission date unless you have circumstances that will not allow submission before the deadline, and requests may be rejected if submitted after the deadline without a valid reason for the delay.
-
Supporting evidence should be uploaded to the online EC system at the time of the EC request if possible, but you can submit your EC Form and then attach any supporting documents/evidence later. Supporting evidence must be provided by you within 10 working days of the date that you submit your EC request.
-
If you are concerned you will not be able to provide documents/evidence to support your request within the 10-working-day deadline please contact our Team urgently for guidance.
Coursework Deferrals:
If you experience significant extenuating circumstances which mean you are unable to submit an assignment, even with support of the Extenuating Circumstances (ECs) system, then you may be able to apply for a Coursework Deferral. Please be aware that applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and appropriate supporting documentation must be provided.
Please note that if you have a proforma with the University we would need additional evidence about how your long-term condition has been significantly impacting you and why you require a Coursework Deferral.
If you are considering applying please contact the Student Experience & Information Team.
