FAQs for Exams

You will find your timetable and summaries for the exam period by logging in to https://myuni.swansea.ac.uk/ and going to the Intranet where you will see Exam Timetables as an option along the left-hand side of the page.

Inclusive Adjustment Provisions for on-site, in-person exams:

For any onsite exams, our exams office are piloting an opt-out system for implementing provisions, whereby your provisions are automatically applied to any in-person exams you sit during your time at Swansea, unless you are informed otherwise.

When the exam timetable is published on your intranet account, it will show your appropriate provisions exam venue, along with brief details of your provision arrangements.

If there are any provisions that you don’t want to be applied to your on-site exams, or you wish to decline your provisions all together and sit in the main venues, please email contact the Exams Office team on examsoffice@swansea.ac.uk.

Inclusive Adjustment Provisions for online exams:

If you have an Inclusive Adjustment proforma with agreed provisions for exams, for any exam that is online and 24 hours or less in duration, your extra-time and/or rest-break provisions will be automatically applied.

If you begin an online assessment and realise that you have not been given the additional time that you should have, please contact the team via StudentSupport-ScienceEngineering@swansea.ac.uk right way (ideally while the assessment is still open) so that we can investigate and correct this if necessary.

Reader Provisions: For students who usually have access to a readers for in-person examinations, this is not an applicable provision for the online assessments. However, we do suggest students review the assistive technology available to them: https://www.swansea.ac.uk/assistive-tech/.

Please also see a new feature now available in Canvas called the ‘Immersive Reader’. This is a Microsoft tool which plugs in to Canvas and helps with reading content in Canvas Pages in accessible ways, including:

• audio narration
• translation
• custom colour schemes
• custom fonts
• and more.

Other than the library buildings, there are a number of spaces at the Bay and Singleton Park Campus you can use for informal study purposes. You can find information about these informal study spaces here.

If you notice a module you are expecting to complete an exam for during the assessment period is not showing on your exam timetable, please contact assessment-scienceengineering@swansea.ac.uk as soon as possible.

We are unable to move the dates of assessments as the timetables have been set and carefully considered, however should you notice any errors in your timetable please contact assessment-scienceengineering@swansea.ac.uk.

The content of all exam papers have been thoroughly checked. However, if during an exam you think you have spotted an error please raise your hand and report this to an exam invigilator. Unless it has a significant impact on the exam paper the error will not be corrected in the exam venue and instead it will be noted by the module coordinator and the Board of Examiners when your results are considered.

If you identify an error on an exam paper and it is not corrected in the exam venue please ensure you note the error in your answer booklet and then continue to answer the examinations paper to the best of your ability as it is written.

For photographed hand-written solutions, use of a scanning app such as Microsoft Office Lens or Adobe Scanner App is highly recommended. Please, if possible, package your solution pages into a single PDF file. Finally, before submitting the PDF, review the document for readability:

• Are all the images clear and in focus?
• Is there any distortion in the images that will make them hard to read?
• Are the images oriented in the correct way?
• Are there artefacts that your app or camera has added, such as watermarks, that have obscured part of what you have written?
• Will I be able to read and mark your work easily?

The few extra minutes this will take can avoid serious issues later.

For TurnItIn Submissions: After the submission has completed, a digital receipt is displayed in your browser window. A copy is also sent via email. It is important to use a valid email address to receive this copy of the digital receipt. Save the receipt and the submission ID it contains, as this is proof of a completed submission. If the digital receipt is not shown on screen after submission, return to the class portfolio page and view the assignment to ensure the paper submission completed correctly.

For Canvas File Upload Submissions: To check you have successfully submitted your assignment, please go into the ‘Assignments’ area and click on the assignment title. In the top right-hand corner, you should see the text ‘Submitted’ and confirmation of the submission time.

To ensure that you have submitted the correct work for the correct module, we recommend that any files that you upload have a title that includes your student number, module code, and a brief title in the format module code_student number_assessment name (eg. EG-128_123456_online-exam). Any submission should not include your name.

If you are struggling to attend an exam or complete an assessment due to difficult circumstances, please see the information on the Extenuating Circumstances page, and please contact the Student Information Team via studentsupport-scienceengineering@swansea.ac.uk to discuss your options.

If you are trying to submit or upload your work and are concerned that you will miss a deadline due to submission issues then we will accept email submissions in extreme cases and only before the deadline. Please try to submit your work through Canvas, and if you are having technical difficulties you can also email your Module Coordinator directly. If you are not able to submit your work via Canvas you can email your work to studentsupport-scienceengineering@swansea.ac.uk and we will contact the Student Education Lead and Module Coordinator to see if the work can be accepted and marked. 

Please contact the Student Information Team via studentsupport-scienceengineering@swansea.ac.uk. Please note that we will be better able to help if you contact the team before the deadline if you are struggling. 

Please contact the faculty Student Experience and Information team as soon as possible to discuss the options, and ideally before your exams begin. If you contact the team during or after an exam, your options will be more limited.

Students are expected to make arrangements for any personal IT equipment that you will need as part of your programme of study. However, if you have lost or damaged your laptop/equipment and need support while getting personal equipment repaired or replaced, then please see the options below (available to students in Swansea):

Short-term Laptop Loans are available through self-service lockers: https://myuni.swansea.ac.uk/it-services/laptop-lockers/

Long-term Laptop Loans are available for students who have eligible extenuating circumstances and are able to demonstrate a clear need for a long-term loan. Please contact the Student Experience and Information Team to discuss.

If you are not in Swansea, and have circumstances that mean that you will not be able to complete your assessments because of IT issues, then deferral may also be an option.

The preferred browser is Chrome, followed by Firefox. We would advise that you use one of these browsers, preferably Chrome if possible.
