Extenuating Circumstances

If your course is extended due to extenuating circumstances and extended deadlines, Student Finance will not be provided for the extended period.

If an extended deadline means that you have unexpected costs i.e. you have to pay more rent, or you are unable to work during this time and you are experiencing financial difficulty, please see information on the University’s Hardship Funds. Applications can take up to 15 working days to process and an award from the fund is not guaranteed, but if you are issued with an award it will be in the form of a grant that does not need to be paid back. 

If you change from Full-Time study to Part-Time, you are changing your mode of study and Student Finance will consider you as being a new student. This means you will need to apply for your funding again, using the correct application form, and the funding that you are entitled to will change. It is important to be aware of your new funding entitlement, and we would recommend that you check the Maintenance amounts that you are entitled to as this will be a lesser amount and you may need to consider your financial plan.

Students can apply for Student Finance for the length of their course, plus one year. It is very important when repeating a year of study to check your entitlement and access to the '+1' of funding, or to look at the possibility of submitting a request for discretionary funding due to Compelling Personal Reasons.

Even though you are only repeating modules, this will be considered by Student Finance as a full year of funding and it is important that you check your funding entitlement and access to the ‘+1’ year of funding.

If you are repeating failed modules as a Full-time student, the level of maintenance funding you receive depends on when you enrol. If you enrol at the start of the academic year, you should receive full funding, but if you enrol in Term 2 or 3, you will receive maintenance funding from the date of enrolment. If you have expenses for the full academic year, such as rent or course costs and would struggle financially, please contact us for further advice.

Your tuition fees will be calculated pro-rata depending on the number of credits you need to repeat. If you have access to the +1 year of funding, or discretionary funding due to Compelling Personal Reasons, these fees will be paid directly to the University by your funding body. You can contact the university’s Finance Team to discuss your specific tuition fee liability.

External candidates are not eligible for Student Finance or hardship funds and will need to self-fund their studies.

Students are not entitled to more than the maximum amount of Master’s funding, even when studies have been affected by Compelling Personal Reasons.

If you transfer to another course and have already accessed the maximum amount of Postgraduate Funding, you will not be entitled to any further payments from SFW or SFE, even if the transfer is due to Compelling Personal Reasons (CPR) such as health-related issues, disability, family problems or bereavement.

If you are transferring to an eligible Part-Time course and have not accessed the maximum Postgraduate funding amount, any remaining funding entitlement will be divided by the remaining academic years.

Repeat periods of study are not funded. Payments will not be made during the repeat period, but any remaining funding entitlement will be paid in line with your payment schedule once you are no longer repeating, but progressing on the course.

Students are eligible to apply to the University’s hardship funds. An award is not guaranteed and if awarded, this would assist with short-term costs only as it is not a form of funding.
