Engineering

In order to pass the level of study, all students must:

• Pass all CORE modules. For a list of CORE modules, please refer to your Part 2 Handbook. 
• Achieve 100 credits at pass level (40%) or above.
• Achieve a minimum of 30% in any failed non-core module.
• Achieve an overall level average of at least 35%.

Please Note:

• At the discretion of the End of Year assessment board, students may be awarded a maximum of 60 credits of re-sits in failed modules, where an assessment is available.
  
  
• Failure of more than 60 credits will mean that no re-sits will be granted and the student may be offered a Repeat Level decision provided that they have passed a minimum of 20 credits, and have not already repeated the level of study.
  
  
• Any student who does not achieve a minimum of 20 credits of passed modules will be withdrawn.   

• 10-20 credits can be Tolerated if modules marks are above 30% and are not CORE modules, and all other programme criteria for progression are met – This applies to Foundation year ONLY.

• For Foundation year, if students fail 1 CORE module and 1 non-CORE module (with 30%+), the student will be required to re-sit the ‘CORE module’ only and will not receive a supplementary in the non-CORE module with a mark above 30%.

• There are additional criteria to be eligible for and to remain on Year in Industry and Year Abroad programmes. Please contact the FSE Employability Team with any specific queries. 

In order to pass the level of study, all students must:

• Achieve 120 passed credits, and pass all CORE modules. Please note that in Year 1, 2, 3 and 4 modules are all CORE for all accredited Engineering programmes. 
• Achieve an overall level average of at least 35%.

Please Note:

• In all accredited Engineering programmes, all modules are ‘CORE’ in accordance with the requirements laid out by the accrediting bodies for the programmes. This means, that although the minimum pass criteria for the year stipulates 100 credits must be passed in order to proceed to the next level of study, any student completing Years 1, 2, 3, 4 or an accredited MSc must pass all 120 credits of modules on which they are enrolled.

• There are additional criteria to be eligible for and to remain on Year in Industry and Year Abroad programmes. Please contact the FSE Employability Team with any specific queries. 

• Undergraduate Non-Finalists (All taught programmes)

  • At the discretion of the End of Year assessment board, students may be awarded a maximum of 60 credits of re-sits in failed modules, where an assessment is available.
  • Failure of more than 60 credits will mean that no re-sits will be granted and the student may be offered a Repeat Level decision provided that they have passed a minimum of 20 credits, and have not already repeated the level of study.

• For Year 3 students on 4-year MEng programmes, the following applies for resits:

  • Students are entitled to 20 credits of resits, and must have an overall average of 55% once they have completed those resits. Therefore students on MEng year 3 must pass 100 credits in order to be granted resits.  If they do not pass 100 credits they will be transferred onto the BEng programme and will follow the finalist rules for resits and degree award.

• Undergraduate Engineering Finalists (excluding Software Engineering)

  • Bachelor/ Master of Engineering Finalist students who have not met the minimum requirements to graduate with an accredited degree, may be offered the opportunity to complete a re-sit in a maximum of 40 credits of failed modules, where supplementary assessments are possible. All re-sits will occur during the August Supplementary period.
  • All supplementary assessment marks will be capped unless appropriate Extenuating Circumstances apply.
  • For students enrolled on the BSc Software Engineering, this is a Science programme, please refer to the guidance for Science students. 

You must achieve the below criteria in order to complete the MEng year of an accredited Engineering Programme:

• Pass all Core modules. For a list of CORE modules, please refer to your Part 2 Handbook.
• Achieve 100 credits at pass level (50%) or above.
• Achieve a minimum of 40% in any failed non-core module.

Please note:

• In all accredited Engineering programmes, all modules are ‘CORE’ in accordance with the requirements laid out by the accrediting bodies for the programmes.This means, that although the minimum pass criteria for the year stipulates 100 credits must be passed in order to proceed to the next level of study, any student completing Years 1, 2, 3, 4 or an accredited MSc must pass all 120 credits of modules on which they are enrolled.

• The Foundation Year (Year 0) and MSc Virtual Reality are not accredited, and are therefore excluded from this.

• Bachelor/ Master of Engineering Finalist students who have not met the minimum requirements to graduate with an accredited degree, may be offered the opportunity to complete a re-sit in a maximum of 40 credits of failed modules, where supplementary assessments are possible. All re-sits will occur during the August Supplementary period.
  
  
• All students must achieve an overall level average of at least 35%, in line with the relevant standard assessment regulations.
  
  
• All supplementary assessment marks will be capped unless appropriate Extenuating Circumstances apply.

If you have failed a module and see an EX beside a component mark in your results:

Some modules require the student to pass the exam with 40+ in order for the coursework element to count. This requirement is noted in your Part 2 Handbook. If students do not pass the exam with 40% an EX will be noted alongside the coursework component and the final mark will be the exam mark only (and will count as a failed module).

If you see a QF beside your module result:

Some modules have component-specific pass marks.  For example, in some cases students must pass each component with 40% as well as passing the module with 40%.  In these cases, where students do not meet the specific component criteria, they will receive a QF against their module mark.  The module mark may be above 40% overall, but a QF means that they have failed the module and will need to resit the components where they did not meet the required criteria.  In these cases, resits will be capped at component level rather than module level. 

The below applies for students who started their programme in September 2022.

All students enrolled on September Entry Taught MSc programmes are assessed according to the non-flexible regulations, excluding the MSc Sustainable Engineering for International Development and the MSc Engineering Leadership Management.

For non-flexible programmes the MSc Degree is divided into two parts. Part One consists of 120 credits of taught modules. Part Two is a 60 credit project/dissertation.

In order to progress from Part One onto Part Two of your MSc programme, you will need to achieve:

• 120 credits by passing modules with a mark of 50% or more.

Students will be allowed one opportunity to redeem any failed modules, and will automatically be registered for supplementary assessments during the resit period in August 2023.

Please note the above guidance does not apply to students enrolled on the MSc Sustainable Engineering Management for International Development and the MSc Engineering Leadership Management. These programmes follow flexible regulations and the above information will not apply. Taught MSc Programmes with a Year in Industry are completed over two years. Year 1 is 120 credits of taught modules, completed from September 2022 – June 2023. Year 2 is divided into Part A and Part B. Part A is a 60 credit project / dissertation, Part B is a 60 credit Industrial Experience Module completed from June 2023 - June 2024.

In order to progress from Part One onto Part Two of your MSc programme, you will need to achieve:

• 120 credits by passing modules with a mark of 50% or more.

Students will be allowed an opportunity to redeem any failed modules, and will automatically be registered for supplementary assessments during the resit period in August 2023.

Failure to pass Part One by the time End of Year results are published will mean a transfer to the non-placement cohort of the relevant MSc programme. For students who started their programme in January 2023

All students enrolled on the January Entry MSc programmes are assessed according to flexible programme regulations. Students on flexible regulations can work on their project/ dissertation alongside their taught modules.

Students enrolled on the January Entry MSc programmes will complete 60 credits of taught modules in the Spring Semester (January 2023 – June 2023), followed by a 60-credit dissertation in the Summer Semester (June 2023 – September 2023), and an additional 60 credits of taught modules in the Autumn Semester (September 2023- January 2024).

In order to complete the programme, you will need to achieve:

• 120 credits at pass level (50%+) or above.

Students will be allowed an opportunity to redeem any failed modules, and will automatically be registered for supplementary assessments during the resit periods in August 2023 (for Summer/Jan-June modules) and March 2024 (for Autumn/September-January modules). All supplementary assessments will be capped at 50%, unless Extenuating Circumstances have been approved.

Please note the above guidance excludes students enrolled on the MSc Sustainable Engineering Management for International Development and the MSc Engineering Leadership Management. Whilst these programmes also follow flexible regulations, these programmes have specific regulations and the above information will not apply for them. For specific guidance, please contact your MSc Coordinator. 

The MEng year enhances and extends the work that you cover in the BEng scheme, and fulfils all of the academic requirements mandatory for those wishing to pursue and achieve Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

• To be eligible to transfer, you will need a 55% Year 2 Average.
• Any International or EU students on a Student Route visa who are interested in transferring to the MEng should contact the Student Information Team before April so the necessary enquires regarding CAS and visa applications can be made.

UK and non-Student Route visa students:

• If you have achieved a 55% Year 2 Average: You may apply for the MEng programme by following Steps 2 to 4 on our Course Transfer advice page.
• If you did not achieve a 55% Year 2 Average: You may request to transfer to the MEng programme after your Year 3 Semester 1 results are released. Requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If we receive academic approval, you may apply by following Steps 2 to 4 on our Course Transfer advice page.

International and EU students with Student Route Visas

• Student Route visa students already in Year 3 unfortunately cannot transfer to the MEng at this stage. However, applying to one of our MSc courses is still an option.

The deadline to either transfer ONTO or OFF the MEng programme was the 31st March 2023. Please contact the Student Information Team if you have questions.

Year 2 students are required to achieve a minimum 55% level average to remain on the MEng programme. If they do not achieve this, they will be transferred onto the BEng equivalent programme during July if they have no re-sits and/or deferrals or after September re-sits if they do.

Year 3 students on the MEng programme will need to achieve a minimum 55% level average to remain on the MEng programme. If they do not achieve this then they will be transferred off the MEng to their BEng equivalent during the Supplementary Exam Board process and be assessed under final-year BEng regulations.

Your Year 2 average is given a weighting of 1 and your Year 3 average a weighting of 2 to give your overall weighted degree average.

Example:

• Year 2 Average = 62.14%
• Year 3 Average = 59.16%
• Weighted Degree Average = (62.14 x 1/3) + (59.16 x 2/3) = (20.67 + 39.33) = 60.15%

Your Year 2 average is given a weighting of 1, your Year 3 average a weighting of 2 and your Year 4 average a weighting of 2 to give your overall weighted degree average.

Example:

• Year 2 Average = 62.36%
• Year 3 Average = 59.43%
• Year 4 Average = 63.10%
• Weighted Degree Average = (62.36 x 1/5) + (59.43 x 2/5) + (63.10 x 2/5) = 12.47 + 23.77 + 25.24 = 61.48%

The overall degree classification shall be calculated based on the mean average of module marks, that are weighted according to their credit value, across the whole programme. 

For further information please refer to the University Postgraduate Assessment Regulations.  

If your weighted degree average comes to within 2% of the next degree classification boundary (called the 'Window of Opportunity'), then the Preponderance and Exit-Velocity principles are applied. This means you could attain a higher degree classification if you satisfy either of these principles.

Preponderance Principle

Half of the credits that count towards your degree must be in a degree classification higher than your weighted degree average.

For a BEng degree, this would mean getting 120 credits at a higher degree classification across Years 2 and 3.

For the MEng, this would mean getting 180 credits across Years 2, 3 and 4 at a higher degree classification.

Example for BEng:

• Year 2 - 40 credits between 50-59% (2:2) and 80 credits between 60-69% (2:1).
• Year 3 - 80 credits between 50-59% (2:2), 30 credits between 60-69% (2:1) and 10 credits at 70+% (1st).
• Weighted Degree Average - 58.37% (2:2).
• Final Result - Upgraded to a 2:1 due to: 
  • 1) The weighted degree average being in the Window of Opportunity.
  • 2) Preponderance being satisfied i.e. 80 credits in Year 2 plus 40 credits in Year 3 were above a 2:2 classification. That gives 120 credits at a higher degree classification than the weighted degree average.

Exit-Velocity Principle

You must achieve an average in your final year (i.e. 3rd Year for BEng; 4th Year for MEng) which is in a higher degree classification than your weighted degree average.

Example:

• Weighted Degree Average - 58.37% (2:2).
• Final Year Average - 61.2% (2:1).
• Final Result - Upgraded to a 2:1 due to: 
  • 1) The weighted degree average being in the Window of Opportunity.
  • 2) Exit-Velocity being satisfied i.e. the final year average is at a higher degree classification than the weighted degree average.
