999

You should always call 999 when it is an emergency, such as when a crime is in progress, someone suspected of a crime is nearby, when there is danger to life or when violence is being used or threatened.

When you require police or an ambulance on campus, contact security who will assist. 

101

You should call 101 to report crime and other concerns that do not require an emergency response. For example, if:

• Your car has been stolen
• Your property has been damaged
• You suspect drug use or dealing in your neighbourhood

111 is the NHS non-emergency number. It's fast, easy and free.

Call 111 and speak to a highly trained adviser, supported by healthcare professionals. They will ask you a series of questions to assess your symptoms and immediately direct you to the best medical care.

NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Calls are free from landlines and mobile phones. This is an out-of-hours GP service.

You can also check your symptoms with the NHS 111 Wales Symptom Checker. If you or someone you care for is feeling unwell, this should be your first thing to check. It'll help you chose who to do and work out who to see next if you are experiencing a common health problem or feeling generally unwell. 

Accident & Emergency (A&E)

Morriston Hospital Accident and Emergency provides a 24-hour facility 7 days a week for the reception, assessment, examination, treatment, and referral of all accident victims, and patients with acute illnesses.

Minor Injury

For any minor injuries, you can visit the Minor Injury Uni at Neath Port Talbot Hospital.
Current opening hours: 8am-9pm, 7 days a week.

An experienced team of specially trained emergency nurse practitioners, triage nurses and health care support workers treat patients for minor conditions including:

• cuts and minor burns
• sprains and strains
• broken bones
• head and facial injuries with no loss of consciousness and the patient is not taking anticoagulant (blood thinner) medication.
• neck injuries, where you are mobile with no pins and needles in your arms.
• non-penetrating eye and ear injuries
• bites (insect, animal or human)
• assaults

If you need information or you're worried about something, feel upset or confused, or you just want to talk to someone, the Samaritans provide confidential emotional support, 24 hours a day.  Contact (from the UK) 08457 90 90 90 or 116 123 from a mobile.

If you have been a victim of crime and would like to speak to someone, you can call Victim Support on 03003030161.  Lines are open 8am-8pm Monday-Friday and 9am-5pm on Saturdays. If you would like support outside of the normal opening hours you can call the support line for free on 0808 168 9111.

StreetSafe is a service that allows you to report safety concerns in public places without giving us your name (anonymously).  

This includes issues like poorly lit streets, abandoned buildings, or vandalism, as well as instances where you feel unsafe due to someone following or verbally abusing you.

Don't let thieves get away with your valuables. Have you brought a laptop, bike, iPad, or something of high value to the University? Register your valuables to help reduce property crime and improve the chances of getting them back in the event of loss or theft.

Nights out in Swansea are always great fun with friends, but there are things to think about beforehand...

Think about who you are going out with and who you are going home with. Never go home with strangers and always stay with your friends. Plan a meeting point within a club just in case you lose a member of your group and you don't have mobile signal.

Have you heard of Ask for Angela? 

The Ask for Angela scheme aims to reduce sexual violence and vulnerability by providing customers of pubs and other venues, with a non-descript phrase they can use to get the attention of staff members who can help separate them from the company of someone with whom they feel unsafe due to that person's actions, words or behaviour. 

Anyone who feels unsafe in such a situation can get help from bar staff by simply asking to speak to "Angela". Staff will then help the person in leaving the venue discreetly and getting home or to a place of safety. This could mean taking the distressed person out of sight, calling for a taxi and making sure they get home okay or even asking the person causing distress to leave the venue if appropriate.

It's always good to catch a taxi or get the late-night bus home after a night out.

If you are catching a taxi always remember:

• Licensed Taxi's in Swansea will only ever be black (London style Hackney Cabs) or white.
• Before getting into a taxi, take a photograph of the Taxi number and registration plate. Make sure you tell the driver what you are doing!
• Always sit in the rear of the Taxi when possible.
• If alone in a taxi, sit behind the driver.

If you do have any concerns, advise the Police or Swansea Council - Taxi Licensing Department.

If you do need any help to catch a taxi, there are marshals available in the following locations: 

• Caer street (Top of Wind Street) on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights. 
• York Street (By Vue Cinema) on Saturday nights.
  
  

Important information about Uber

Whilst the Uber app may work in Swansea, it will connect you to local taxis. There are currently no Uber cars in the Swansea area. So, if someone says they’re an Uber – do NOT get in the car. If possible, take down the registration and report it to the police.
