Understanding Sexual Misconduct

Sexual misconduct is defined under the university's policy as:

'Students’ general misconduct of a sexual nature and includes (but is not limited) to rape, sexual harassment, sexual assault, obscene/indecent remarks etc. this list is not exhaustive and “any conduct of a sexual nature without consent” could be considered as sexual misconduct'.

Any form of sexual misconduct is never okay.

What are the consequences of committing sexual misconduct?

Impact on the victim

The student who has experienced the unwanted behaviour will be deeply affected which could lead to them feeling unsafe to socialise in particular spaces or attend their extracurricular activities.

Potential criminal proceedings

Sexual assault and rape are criminal offences. 

Whilst criminal proceedings are ongoing, you may have restrictions placed on coming onto campus reflecting your bail conditions, which will limit to be a part of the full student experience.

If you are found guilty of committing a sexual offence, you could face time in prison, be listed on the Sexual Offenders Register, and have your studies terminated from the University alongside a campus ban.

Academic impact

If accused of committing sexual misconduct, there is a chance that you will be suspended from coming on to campus, which will cause a significant impact to being able to continue your studies whilst an investigation is taking place.

When you subject another person to sexual misconduct, you don’t only have an effect on your studies but also can cause significant disruption and trauma to the other student.

Impact on the community

At Swansea University, we want our students, staff, and wider community to feel safe, free from sexual violence, harassment, and assault. When you behave in a way that makes another student feel fear, this has an impact on the wider community.
