MSc Nursing

As you may be aware, St. David’s Park is due to undergo an amazing, complete renovation with the creation of our brand-new Immersive Simulation Suites and upgrades to some other teaching spaces, lights, heating, flooring and décor.

As plans are now in full flow, we wanted to communicate details of the planned works to ensure students are kept informed of what the works will entail as it is our biggest and most ambitious refurbishment since we took over the building.

As this is such a large project, it will be completed in 2 phases beginning in January 2023 and finishing in July 2023.  The phasing has been put into place to ensure we are still able to deliver our programmes to all of our students with minimal disruption. The finer details of phase 1 are currently being put into place, and phase 2 details will be disseminated later in the project.

Below is a brief list of the planned works and dates for you to put into your diaries:

During January 2023, the Library will be undergoing refurbishment as part of wider works at the SDP campus.

The Library will run a service from the ground floor of the building similar to that during the COVID period.

There will be no, or very limited access to the Library itself with no access to PCs at all. A Request and Collect service will ensure that books are still accessible and can be borrowed and returned but users must use the Request and Collect service as there will be no access to the book stock for students or academic staff. 

Student 1-2-1 sessions will be via zoom.

Health and Safety

There will be substantial demolition activities being undertaken during certain times.  If you feel that you will be affected by the dust and noise created by the works, please can I ask that you contact your academic mentor who can then arrange for you to be seen by Occupational Health for discussions and plans to be put into place to ensure your health and safety. Dates for the demolition work will be disseminated to students once a schedule of works has been received from the awarded contractors.

We will be providing weekly updates regarding the works and the plans that will be put in place for students which will be communicated to you via email or on Canvas.

We appreciate that there will be some disruption while this work is underway, but we are doing everything in our power to ensure that this disruption will not have a significant impact on your studies.  Please bear with us, because once this work is complete, you will benefit from state of the art facilities which will really enhance your learning experience.

The refurbishment works at St.Davids Park has started and in preparation and to minimise disruption to teaching as much as possible we have already occupied building 1 on the site for classroom teaching.

Please can you pay particular attention to the location of your sessions when checking celcat to see the difference in locations for each individual sessions. Attached  is a map of the site highlighting building 1 and the best parking spaces and routes to the building.

Please note that this building is on a temporary loan to us and external services are still located on the ground floor of building 1, so please be mindful of the noise when entering and leaving the buildings.

The building has 3 teaching rooms and a small kitchen, we have moved microwaves over to the kitchen for everyone to use and also had a small fridge and urns installed, please ensure everything is kept clean and food is not stored over night in the fridge.

The Student Experience team has kindly donated some hot drinks  and food to go items for all students, can I please ask that all students bring travel mugs to avoid spillages as we do not want to incur extra cleaning costs before handing the building back.

Unfortunately, building 1 does not have Eduroam.  While this is something that our IT department are looking into, because of the time frame we will be occupying the building for, it may be something that cannot be put into place.  Can all students please ensure that they download their lecture notes before all sessions (if this is something that you would normally do)

As well as subject specific support by college teaching staff and your personal academic mentor, the Centre for Academic Success provides courses, workshops and one-to-one support in areas such as:

• Academic writing
• Maths and statistics
• Critical thinking
• Time management
• Digital skills
• Presentation skills
• Note taking
• Revision, memory and exam techniques
• English language skills (if English is not your first language).

In addition, if you have a Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD), disability, mental health or medical condition, the Centre for Academic Success have Specialist Tutors to support your learning, working alongside the Disability Office and Wellbeing Service to support all your needs and requirements whilst studying at Swansea University.

As an undergraduate student you will be given an Academic Mentor.  This is a member of teaching staff in the Faculty or School who acts as your key point of contact while you are at Swansea University.

You should meet with your Academic Mentor one-to-one at least once every Semester.  You may also be invited to group meetings or workshops with your Academic Mentor.

Your Academic Mentor will guide and support you with your academic, professional and personal development.  They can help you with:

• Reviewing your academic progress
• Accessing academic and personal support e.g. with welfare issues
• Understanding the exam and assessment system
• Academic references for placements / job applications
• Answering any other questions you may have or recommend where to best seek advice

Mentors may also have ‘office hours’ when you can see them as well.  You can email your mentor if there is something you want to discuss and/or to arrange a meeting.

The main purpose of the Nursing Buddy Scheme is to help new students settle into Swansea University and the course, by enabling students to meet up with thier buddy on a voluntary, flexible basis to address basic concerns about student life and learn from experiences of an already established student on the course.

Buddy's are volunteer undergraduate students who will be entering their 2^nd or 3^rd year of study, who have undergone training to help equip them for their role.

Buddy's are normally matched with one or two first year students from the same course (and discipline). 

Their experiences and knowledge are of paramount importance to the effectiveness of this scheme  in helping support you in your first year!

Welcome to the Swansea University Nursing Society (SUNS) 

This society is currently being revamped for 2022-23. Throughout the year we'll be hosting a multitude of socials, including themed nights out and beach BBQ's. .

SUNS will be open to all fields of nursing (Adult, Mental Health, & Child) for both Singleton Campus and St David's Park Campus

We’re keen to develop a St David Park group, working with us, to host events local to the St David's Park campus and the society are looking for two social secretaries from the September intake to be part of this!

Your roles would consist of running your own social media pages and organising/running socials. These may be nights out, picnics, and any other event you can think of, and that members are keen for. You’d also be expected to attend regular committee meetings.
