Hi, I'm John!

I grew up in Kent, and completed my masters in physics before moving to Swansea to carry out a PhD in Chemistry. I am currently two years into my PhD and have really felt welcomed by the Swansea research community. In my spare time I am a keen cyclist, often enjoying a weekend trip down to Rhossili bay for some coffee and cake, as well as enjoying open-water swimming when the water isn’t too icy!

  BEING A SUBJECT REPRESENTATIVE

I’m keen to help make the experience for postgraduate chemists as rewarding as possible, either through support in navigating the university system or through passing on feedback for change to the department and university. The transition from being a taught masters student to an independent researcher can often be difficult, and I hope that any support I can provide will help people to adjust and adapt to their new roles.

 KEY RESPONSIBILTIES

 MY CURRENT STUDIES...

I try to control the electrons in a special subset of molecules known as radicals. I then apply this understanding to applications from sustainable lighting to quantum sensors. Working so close to the beach feels like a real luxury – on a clear sunny day, just being able to take an hour on the beach for lunch can really help give you the clarity to overcome any obstacles.
