Transferring to the MEng

The MEng year enhances and extends the work that you cover in the BEng scheme, broadening and deepening your knowledge and skills in the subject. It also fulfils all of the academic requirements mandatory for those wishing to pursue and achieve Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

How to apply - British/UK students

Year 1 - It is the Faculty’s policy at this time to wait until we have students’ Year 2 results before allowing them to transfer onto the MEng programme. If you achieve an average on or above 55% during Year 2 you’ll be invited to transfer on to the MEng programme after you get your results in the summer.

Year 2 - If you are a British/UK student or an international or EU student who does not require a student visa, and have attained a 55% average at the end of Year 2, you can apply for the MEng programme by following Steps 2 to 4 on our Course Transfer advice page.

Year 3 - If you are a British/UK student or an international or EU student who does not require a student visa, and are not on the MEng programme by the time you enrol for Year 3 and:

Achieved a 55% Year 2 average: you can apply for the MEng programme by following Steps 2 to 4 on our Course Transfer advice page.
Did not achieve a 55% Year 2 average: you are able to request to transfer to the MEng programme after your Semester 1 results are released in February. Requests will be considered and academic approval given on a case-by-case basis. If we receive academic approval, you can apply for the MEng programme by following Steps 2 to 4 on our Course Transfer advice page.

The deadline to transfer ONTO the MEng programme is the 31st March of your final year of study e.g. 3rd Year of a 3-Year BEng programme.

The deadline to transfer OFF the MEng programme is the 31st March of your penultimate year of study e.g. 3rd Year of a 4-Year MEng programme.

How to apply - International and EU students with visas

Year 1 - Whilst you can research the possibility of transferring to the MEng programme in Year 1, it’s the Faculty’s policy at this time to wait until we have students’ Year 2 results before allowing them to transfer onto the MEng programme. If you achieve an average on or above 55% during Year 2, you will be invited to transfer on to the MEng programme after you get your results in the summer.

Year 2 - It is important you register your interest in transferring to the MEng programme as soon as possible to ensure that visa formalities can be completed before you enrol on Year 3.

Please register your interest by sending a Transfer Request Form and Previous Study and Personal Statement Questionnaire to studentsupport-scienceengineering@swansea.ac.uk.
We will keep your transfer request on hold until 2nd Year results are released in July or September (if you have re-sits in August).
If you meet the 55% average grade, your transfer will be processed on or shortly after results day.
Depending on your immigration status, you may then have to apply for a new CAS and visa before starting your Year 3 studies. To ensure there are no delays, please contact International@CampusLife for advice on your specific situation.

IMPORTANT - If you are still on the BEng programme by 26th September 2022, and are applying for a visa outside of the UK it will not be possible for you to transfer onto the MEng at a later date.

Year 3 - Unfortunately, Home Office regulations do not allow Tier 4 Visa Students in Year 3 to transfer onto the MEng programme. The deadline to transfer OFF the MEng programme is the 31st March of your penultimate year of study e.g. 3rd Year of a 4-Year MEng programme.

Sponsorship

If you are a sponsored student please note that your sponsor will be contacted by the University to confirm their approval before the transfer can be processed.

Year in Industry Programme

If you are already enrolled on a Year in Industry programme and successfully transfer to the MEng, you will have the option to complete your placement year after Year 2 or after Year 3. Please consider when you would like to do your placement and make the Faculty aware of your decision when submitting your transfer request.

If for any reason you are unable to access the MEng programme, then you may still be eligible for one of our postgraduate MSc taught or research programmes which, along with the MEng, satisfy the academic requirements for CEng status and provide excellent opportunities to further your skills and understanding.
